(LEGACY) SU ACCOUNT

You May Get an Account at SU

The ownership of Nordita is shared between KTH and Stockholm University (SU), and even if as a Nordita staff member you are employed by KTH, you can have an account at SU. Actually, up until 2010, all Nordita staff members had their primary computer account with SU. Since all new Nordita staff members will only be given KTH accounts, and others are encouraged to move to KTH accounts gradually, the information below is mainly of interest only to those who have not yet made the move.

In the SU account is included:

  • an e-mail address in the form   <username>@su.se
  • access to your SU mailbox via IMAP or via webmail at https://mail.su.se
  • a home directory
  • access to an administrative page for your account at https://mitt.su.se

YOUR SU ACCOUNT

Activating Your SU Account

An SU account is created by sending a request to the SU computing department. This is done by each department's SUKAT responsible, which for Nordita is Hans Mühlen. If you have an SU account, your username and password will typically not be the same as for your KTH account.

Changing Your Password

When your SU account is created, you will be issued with a password that is sent to you in an ordinary mail. For security reasons these passwords are random sequences of characters. You might want to change your password to one which is still secure but easier to remember.

  • Go to http://mitt.su.se
  • Follow the link ""Kontohantering" to http://kontohantering.su.se/
  • Follow the link "Ändra lösenord" in the menu to the left
  • Enter your SU username, your current password, and then the password you would like to have, twice
  • Confirm with [Byt lösenord]

If the new password you suggest is considered too simple, you will be forced to select another, untill the new password is accepted.

To be considered secure enough, the password needs to fulfill the following criteria. The password must have:

  • at least 10 characters
  • variation (the same character must not appear more then three times)
  • a mixture of both upper case letters, lower case letters (both only from the English alphabet), and digits

The password must not:

  • be a name, placename, name of a course, a telephone number, or any other personal and easily obtainable information
  • be a word that can be found in a dictionary of any language
  • be the same as a password you have already used earlier
  • contain the Swedish letters åäö

If You Have Forgotten Your Username or Password

If you have forgotten your SU account credentials, you need to go in person to the SU Helpdesk to have them reset the password. The helpdesk is on the main SU campus in Frescati, in house D (one of the blue buildings, just across the entrance of the main library) on floor 4. Opening hours are Monday-Friday 9.00-16.30. Bring an ID.

YOUR SU MAIL

Reading Your SU Mail Via Webmail

You can access your mail account via the SU Webmail at https://mail.su.se (there is a link to the webmail from the general administrative page http://mitt.su.se)

Reading Your SU Mail Via a Local Mail Client

If you prefer to read your mail via a mail client program installed on your local machine, such as Thunderbird, Mac Mail, Pine or Outlook, first you need to give the client instructions on where to fetch incoming mails and where to send outgoing mails. This is done in different ways for different clients, but in all cases the following parameters characterizing your accound need to be entered:

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
Server name: smtp.su.se port 465
Secure connection: SSL
Authentication type: password

Incoming Mail Server (IMAP)
Server type: IMAP
Server name: mbox.su.se port 993
Secure connection: SSL
Authentication type: password

See Configure Email Clients for instructions on how to do make these settings in some popular mail clients.

Redirecting Your SU Mail to Another Mail Account

If you prefer to read the mails sent to your SU mail address from some other mailbox (eg. a gmail account or other institutional account) you can ''redirect'' all incoming SU mails to that other account.

  • Go to http://mitt.su.se
  • Follow the link ""Kontohantering" to http://kontohantering.su.se/
  • Login with your SU account name and password (both will typically be different from your KTH credentials); it may take some time until you eventually are redirected to the "Kontohantering" page
  • Under "E-postleverans" follow the link "Omdirigera"; a typical un-redirected SU mail address looks like user@mbox.su.se
  • Under "Ange adress" select "Annan adress", enter the e-mail address where incoming SU mail should be redirected to (typically your KTH mail address) and confirm with the button [Spara]
  • If you get a confirming message, all future mails to your KTH account will be redirected; check by sending a mail to your SU mail address and see if it arrives in the mailbox you have chosen

Redirecting Mail from Another Mail Account to Your SU Account

If instead you want mail sent to another of your mail addresses redirected to your SU account, you need to check with your other mail provider on how to change the settings of your other account.
