ALPINE SETTINGS

This explains how you add a signature to your account settings in Apline, the text-based e-mail client that replaced Pine, both developed at the University of Washington.

Create a Signature

  • Open Alpine
  • In the main menu, press "S" for Setup

  • In the next menu, press "S" for Signature

  • You are now in editing mode for the signature; either type your own signature, or copy-paste a Nordita signature template, as follows...

  • Open a web browser and go to the signature creation page on the Nordita intranet
  • After selecting your name in the menu you get a page with several signature templates; scroll down to a text signature template that you want to use
  • Select the whole signature text within the box
  • Copy the selection ("Ctrl-C" or "Cmd-C")

  • Switch back to Apline and the signature editor
  • Paste the text you copied ("Ctrl-V")
  • You can edit the template text if you want
  • Exit the editor (press "Ctrl-X")

  • Press "S" to confirm that you want to save the signature

  • You are now back at the main menu

Use a Signature in a New E-Mail

Once you have defined your signature you don't have to do anything, the singature will automatically be inserted at the bottom of every new message you write. To remind you:

  • From the Apline mein menu, select "C" to Compose Message

  • In the editing view for the message, the signature text is already added at the end of the message
  • You can edit the signature text, or remove it, just as any ordinary message text
