INSTALL PRINTOMAT ON MAC

To install the Printomat service on a Mac, you need to go through two steps:

  1. Install the printomat driver on your computer by downloading and installing an installation script.

  2. The first time you print to the printomat, you need to authenticate with your Stockholm University username and password. If you save your credentials you only need to do this once.
The printomat service only works if your computer is connected to a Stockholm University network.

At Nordita this means that your computer needs to be connected either:

  • over a wired network connection;
    there are network cables at every office desk at Nordita,

or

  • over a wireless network together with VPN

1. Install the Printomat Driver

Stockholm University provide a script which automates the installation of the printomat service on a Mac.

  • Run the file Printomat2022.pkg (or Printomat2.pkg or Printomat2023.pkg) by double-clicking the icon.

  • Follow the instructions in the installation program.

    NB: Modern versions of OS X may block the installation of software from unidentified developers. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy to allow the installation.

  • You can check in "Printers & Scanners" in System Preferences that a new printer "Printomat2022" has appeared in the list of installed printers. It should also appear in any print dialogue box.

  • Consider making the Printomat your default printer.
  • Finally, you need to authenticate at first printout, as described in the next section.

2. Authenticate for your First Printout

When you login to a printomat with your University card, you only see your own print jobs. How does the printomat system know who is printing from your computer? This is done by authenticating with your Stockholm University username and password the first time you send a print job to the printomat queue.

  • Open any application, like a web browser or document viewer, select a document and hit [Cmd-P] to print it, as usual.

  • Select the "Printomat2022" (or "Printomat2" or Printomat2023.pkg) queue as the destination and confirm that you want to print.

  • As usual, the icon of the selected printer, now the "Printomat2022" (or "Printomat2" or Printomat2023.pkg), appears in your dock while the document is being printed. This first printout, however, will be held, and you need to authenticate to send it to the printer.

  • To do this, click on the "Printomat2022" (or "Printomat2" or Printomat2023.pkg) icon in the dock or open "Printers & Scanners" in System Preferences, select "Printomat2022" (or "Printomat2" or Printomat2023.pkg) in the list, and click "Open Print Queue".

  • Sometimes the printout hangs. If that happens, open the "Printomat2022" (or "Printomat2" or Printomat2023.pkg) print queue window, click to highlight your print job, and then click the "Resume" button at the end of the line (circular arrow). The window will look different in different versions of Mac OS X.

  • The first time you print on the Printomat, a dialogue window opens. Fill in your Stockholm University username and your Stockholm University password.

    Important! Make sure you check "Remember this password in my keychain". If you don't check this option, you will have to authenticate every time you print a document. Finally confirm.

    If entering your SU username and password doesn't work you might have an older username and password combination stored in your keychain. Go to your /Applications/Utilities folder and start the Keychain Access app. Select the "login" keychain and "Passwords" category, find any item related tp "Printomat" and delete it. Then try printing again.

  • Your document will now be sent to the Printomat queue, and you can have it printed by going to the nearest printomat, logging in with your printomat card, and selecting the document from the list of print jobs. (If the authentication doesn't work the first time, just repeat resuming and authenticating until the document is sent to the printer.)
