Staff members of Nordita may install copies of Mathematica on their work computers using a Stockholm University license (or a KTH license for those Norditians employed by KTH). Mathematica is available for the Linux/Unix, MacOS and Windows platforms.
Below you find instructions on:
- How to install Mathematica for the first time
- How to upgrade an expired Mathematica license
NOTE: THESE INSTRUCTIONS ONLY APPLY TO VERSION 8 AND LATER
Neither Stockholm University nor KTH any longer provide licenses for Mathematica 7 or earlier.
INSTALLING MATHEMATICA
Install Mathematica on Your Computer
- Ask Hans Mühlen for installation medium.
- Log in to your computer as an administrator and start the installation program on the installation medium.
- During the installation process, choose default answers (unless you know what you are doing).
- If you are installing on MacOS or Windows, after the installation process has been completed you will be prompted to select when to enter licensing information, now or the first time you run Mathematica. The process is the same in both cases, so if you have all the necessary information (see below), you can proceed with the licensing information now.
Activate the Mathematica License
This activation must be done separately for each user on your computer separately (unless you move the license file so that it can be read by every user, see reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/tutorial/RegistrationAndPasswords.html for instructions).
- Ask Hans Mühlen for the Stockholm University (or KTH) Activation Key number for Mathematica. It is in the form nnnn-nnnn-aaaaaa, where n are digits 0-9, and "a" are alphanumeric characters "A-Z0-9".
- You need to be logged in to your computer as an administrator, and the computer needs to be online.
- If you did not continue to enter licensing information immediately after installation, start Mathematica.
- You should be prompted for the Activation Key. Enter it and confirm. Mathematica should now start.
Check the Status of the Mathematica License on Your Computer
The status of your current license (like issuing university and expiration date) can be found in the general information display for the program.
- Start Mathematica.
- Select the "About Wolfram Mathematica" menu. On Windows and Linux, this is under the main "Help" menu, on MacOS you find it under the menu "Mathematica".
- In the window that opens you find some information about the version of Mathematica installed, the current Activation Key and the issuing University (SU or KTH).
- To get more information, like the Machine ID and the expiration date of the license, press the [System Information] button.
UPGRADING AN EXPIRED LICENSE
The license is usually valid for one year, and after this it has to be upgraded. The end of the license period for Stockholm University and KTH licenses is usually in mid-autumn. You will get a warning from Mathematica when the license is about to expire.
The way Mathematica licensing is set up at Stockholm University and KTH, licenses should be automatically upgraded at the end of the licensing period. In this case, you will not have to do anything. But this is the ideal case.
If you have waited until after the license expires, and the license for some reason is not auto-renewed, the next time you open Mathematica you will be prompted with the same dialogue as when you ran the program for the first time. Just follow the instructions below (you can also upgrade the license before the expiry date):
- Ask Hans Mühlen for a new Activation Key.
- Start Mathematica.
- Go to the "Help" menu, then "Enter Activation Key".
- Enter the Activation Key and Confirm.
- Restart Mathematica.
- From the "Help" menu (Linux/Unix and Windows) or "Mathematica" menu (MacOS), select "About Mathematica" and then press [System Information]. Check for "License Expiration Date" in the information window - is the end pushed ahead another year as expected?
