PROFESSORSHIP IN ASTROPHYSICS AT NORDITA
As was stated in the previous Nordita News, this position will be open in January 1998, on the retirement of Bernard Pagel. The Board has set up a committee whose members are Claes Fransson (Stockholm), Igor Novikov (Copenhagen), Sir Martin Rees (Cambridge), Hector Rubinstein (Uppsala), and Chris Pethick (Nordita, Chair, pethick@nordita.dk) to advise it. If you have views about desirable subject areas for the appointment, or wish to suggest suitable candidates, you are invited to contact members of the committee. Nordic physicists are invited in addition to contact members of the Nordita subfield committee in astrophysics, chaired by Claes Fransson (fransson@astro.su.se), or their national representative on the Nordita Board, concerning the form of the announcement. NORDIC PROJECTS AND CORRESPONDING FELLOWS 1997
At its meeting on 5 November 1996, Nordita's Board decided to renew the following Nordic projects: ``Non-Linear Phenomena in Accretion Disk Around Black Holes'' organized by M. Abramowicz; ``Supersymmetric Theories'' organized by P. Di Vecchia; ``Computational Materials and Surface Physics'' organized by B. Lundqvist; ``Fundamental Constituents of Matter'', organized by P. Osland; ``The Nature of Gamma Ray Bursts'' organized by R. Svensson; ``Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions'' organized by H. Heiselberg, L. Csernai, and V. Ruuskanen. The support is granted for a period of one year. In addition, M. Abramowicz, Goeteborg, B. Lundqvist, Goeteborg, and S. Aberg, Lund will continue as corresponding fellows. L. Thorlacius, (Princeton), who has been a regular visitor at Nordita, will continue his affiliation with the institute.

 

POSTDOCS IN NUCLEAR ASTROPHYSICS
UNIVERSITY OF AARHUS
The Institute for Physics and Astronomy of the University of Aarhus invites applicants for Postdoctoral positions in Nuclear Astrophysics to be filled in 1997. The candidates are expected to have a strong background and research interest in (nuclear) many-body theory and its application to astrophysics. Interested candidates should send their letter of application, along with a curriculum vitae, list of publications and three letters of recommendation before February 3, 1997 to Professor K. NEW DEVELOPMENTS WITH STRONGLY CORRELATED ELECTRONS
December 12-14, 1996, Nordita, Copenhagen
A small workshop is planned to discuss recent analytical work in the field of strongly correlated two-dimensional electrons, with applications to high Tc superconductors and the Quantum Hall Effect. Among suggested topics of interest are the problems of the square Fermi surface and the related problem of calculating correlation functions in the exactly solvable one-dimensional models (particularly, the XXZ model in a magnetic field), as well as the non-Fermi liquid behavior in Quantum Hall states at even denominator fractions and the bosonization of the effective Fermi surface of composite fermions.

ASPECTS OF SUBNUCLEAR PHYSICS IN THE NORDIC AREA

Informal meeting on aspects of Subnuclear Physics in the Nordic Area at Nordita, December 16-17, 1996 (in connection with the meeting of the committee of subnuclear physics).

NORDIC MEETING ON MEDIUM AND HIGH ENERGY NUCLEAR PHYSICS

The meeting will take place at Graeftaavallen in central Sweden, January 7-11, 1997 (with January 6 and 12 for travel). This biennal symposium is a long-term Nordic collaboration tradition. PHYSICS OF STRUCTURALLY DISORDERED MATERIALS

DYNAMICAL PROPERTIES OF UNCONVENTIONAL MAGNETIC SYSTEMS

The objective of this Advanced Study Institute is to present in a pedagogical manner the current experimental and theoretical knowledge of the dynamical properties of unconventional magnetic systems (low-dimensional and mesoscopic magnetism, unconventional ground states, quantum magnets, soft matter etc.) that are important for an understanding of co-operative phenomena, fluctuations and excitations. NORDITA MASTER CLASS IN PHYSICS
July 26 - August 2, 1997, Nordita, Copenhagen
This school for undergraduate students will be organized at NORDITA during the period July 26 - August 2, 1997. Four hot physics topics will be covered by internationally renowned physicists. The school aims to show undergraduate students how interesting physics is, and to inspire them to make their own excursions in the field. The school is open to students with at least three years university study in physics, or corresponding studies at technical university, but who have not embarked upon a PhD programme. About 45 Nordic and Baltic students will be selected on the basis of their grades in physics/mathematics together with a recommendation letter from a teacher. FOURTH NORDIC SUMMER SCHOOL IN NUCLEAR PHYSICS
August 11 - 22, 1997, Falsterbo, Sweden
The fourth Nordic Summer School in Nuclear Physics will take place in Falsterbo, Sweden, August 11-22, 1997. The preliminary list of topics is: Nuclear Structure - Basic Ideas; Standard Model - Basic Ideas; Euroball Physics; Physics with Radioactive Beams; Hadron Physics; Electron Probes; Ultrarelativistic Collisions; Chaotic Phenomena. The school is aimed at graduate students in experimental as well as in theoretical physics. The main emphasis is on nuclear physics, but we also welcome students from other areas of physics who would like to learn about modern nuclear physics. The school is open to students from all parts of the world, but with priority for Nordic and Baltic students.
