The recruitment process for assistant professors at Nordita is now approaching completion.
April afternoon outside Nordita
Sixteen candidates were called to interviews on April 24-25, and the search committee decided to recommend the board to offer positions to three candidates. During an extra board meeting by telephone on May 4th the board decided to endorse the recommendation by the search committee.
Since the positions are as Nordita guest professors at KTH, profiles for the positions were suggested to the faculty, which endorsed the profiles at a meeting on May 15th. On May 30th the central employment committee decided that all three candidates were competent to be employed as Nordita guest professors. The three candidates are:
Eddy Ardonne |
Stefan Hofmann |
Markus Porto |
Eddy Ardonne, is presently at ?Microsoft station Q? at UC Santa Barbara. His research interest is in theoretical condensed matter, including topological phases and quantum computation. Stefan Hofmann is with the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ontario. His research field is cosmology, in particular dark matter and dark energy. Markus Porto is presently ?Juniorprofessor? of Condensed Matter Theory at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany. His present research interest are mainly in the physics of complex systems in non-equilibrium, with applications in particular to biological problems.
Formal letters of invitation as Nordita guest professors have been sent to the three appointees by the president of KTH.
During the regular board meeting on June 8th the recruitment process was discussed. The process used was a bit cumbersome, and a simplified procedure is planned for the future.
Nordita also has the pleasure to welcome professor Ulf Lindström who has joined Nordita on a 25% basis for a year from 2007-05-01. His research area is in string theory and supersymmetry.
The scientific advisory committee will convene in Stockholm August 20-21, and those from the board who have the possibility will be present during the discussions. During this meeting research themes and new recruitments will be discussed
Two new assistant professor positions will be announced during the fall. The research areas for these positions will be decided at the next board meeting on August 31st after a discussion with the advisory board. It is also planned that Nordita will announce a permanent position as professor at Nordita during the fall.
A new board and a new chairman are to be appointed for a three year period from 2007-07-01. The chairman is to be suggested by NOS-N, and the board members by the national research councils. NOS-N decided at their meeting on May 20-21 to suggest professor Thordur Jonsson as chairman. The formal decision is to be taken by the presidents of KTH and SU. No suggestions for board members have yet been sent from the national research councils, and in the case that some nominations are delayed the mandate of the corresponding present board members will be extended until nominations arrive. On July 1st professor Risto Nieminen will take up the position as Director for Nordita. Since Risto Nieminen only works 50% for Nordita, professor Ulf Wahlgren has been appointed deputy director on 50% until 2008-06-31.
The board also decided that an invitation to suggest programs for 2008-2009 should be posted as soon as possible. At most five programs will be supported, one during the fall of 2008 and the rest in 2009. The program suggestions will be evaluated by the advisory board prior to a decision by the board. Information will be available shortly on the home page.
There are still problems with the home page and with the Nordita computer network in general. These problems will hopefully be rectified soon.
A number of
different Nordita logos
have been proposed and new web page designs are now ready for inspection.
The move of the web pages from Copenhagen to Stockholm is still in progress.
Weekly meetings are being held at Nordita to discuss the progress.
The protocols of these meetings are available on the Indico web pages; see
the Indico pages under group meetings and click for
Nordita computing.
Some of the user's web pages have also been moved.
For some of the big data files additional disk space is being perchased.
About 60 people came to the Radiation Hydrodynamics Meeting
that was held in Stockholm.
The meeting was supported jointly by Nordita and the European
Science Foundation.
Streaming videos of all talks are available on the
main page of the meeting; see the Indico pages under
Conferences.
A detailed report
of the meeting is available on the web under the address
