Professor Konstantin Zarembo will be joining Nordita in September 2010. His field of research is theoretical high energy physics where he has made a number of seminal contributions. His recent work has mainly been in the area of integrability in gauge theories and string theory. Professor Zarembo received his PhD in 1997 at the Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow. He comes to Nordita from École Normale Supérieure in Paris and has previously held positions at Uppsala University and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He has selected Uppsala University for his tenured professorship but, in accordance with the agreement on Nordita professorships between the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, and Uppsala University, he will be on extended leave from that position while serving at Nordita.
Mrs. Bernadette Ebenholtz is Chief Administrator at Nordita, starting March 1. She is originally from Ireland but has lived in the Stockholm area since the mid 1980's. Her previous positions include working in the Financial Control Department at Skandia International and more recently as Chief Financial Officer and in charge of facilities at Josephinahemmet in Stockholm.
A total of 356 applications for Nordita Fellowships were received this year, which is a new record by a considerable margin. The applications were divided up among the three Nordic Research Committees for evaluation and ranking. We would like to take this opportunity to thank committee members for their time and continuing commitment to Nordita. The recipients of the six fellowships that were awarded are listed below (in alphabetical order) along with their current affiliation and field of research.

Nordita is announcing a tenured professorship in theoretical condensed matter physics with an expected starting date in January 2011. This holder of the position is expected to play an important role in the continuing buildup of Nordita in Stockholm, carrying out high-quality research and providing leadership in theoretical condensed matter physics. This will include guiding postdoctoral fellows, interacting with colleagues and visitors at Nordita and elsewhere in the Nordic countries, and taking an active part in organizing research programs and other events. There are no teaching obligations at Nordita, but faculty members are encouraged to engage in PhD supervision and advanced level teaching at Nordic universities. Strong candidates from any subfield of theoretical condensed matter physics and related areas, including biological physics, complex systems, and statistical physics, will be considered. The application deadline is May 17, 2010.

Nordita, the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics, is announcing a new program, intended for PhD students in the Nordic and Baltic countries, offering selected students the opportunity to spend time at Nordita and take advantage of the research environment and ongoing scientific activities at the institute and the AlbaNova University Center in Stockholm. This can, in particular, include collaboration on research projects with Nordita academic staff and participation in Nordita Scientific Programs in areas of interest to the students, but should also be viewed as an opportunity to broaden their general knowledge and to interact with researchers working in diverse areas of modern theoretical physics. Visiting PhD fellows may also be interested in taking PhD-level courses offered at Stockholm area universities.
A Visiting PhD Fellowship will be awarded for a period of one to four months, providing accommodation and a contribution towards travel and living expenses in Stockholm. Fellows must be registered PhD students in theoretical physics or a related subject at a university in the Nordic or Baltic countries at the time of the fellowship visit to Nordita. Applications for the fellowship program can be submitted at jam.nordita.org and please note that only on-line applications will be considered.
Fellowships are awarded twice a year but starting dates for stays at Nordita are flexible. Applications for Fall 2010 should be received by May 31, 2010 and for Spring 2011 by November 30, 2010. The program has two main themes. The first is on integrability in N = 4 gauge theories, where there has been remarkable progress over the last six years. The scienti?c goal of this part of the program is to bring together leaders in the ?eld in order to attack the many remaining problems in the subject. The core participants for the program are expected to be specialists in integrability, gauge theories and/or string theory, fostering an environment to aid in the search for new directions in N = 4 gauge theories and other theories that have an underlying integrable structure.
The 2010 conference on Integrability in Gauge and String Theories (IGST2010) will be held at the program site from 28 June to 2 July.
The second part of the program is on AdS/CFT duality and its applications. The goal of this part of the program is further advance the exciting developments that have taken place with regard to quark-gluon plasmas, non-relativistic CFTs, hydrodynamics, and possible applications to condensed matter systems.
An objective of the program is to support interaction between the two main themes. It is anticipated that specialists from each group will be simultaneously present, allowing for the exchange of new ideas between the two groups.
The Nordita Winter School on Dynamo Theory, organized by Professor Axel Brandenburg, was held at AlbaNova for two weeks in January this year. The event attracted mainly students from mainland Europe where research in dynamo theory has had a strong position for several decades. Participants from the Nordic countries came mainly from Helsinki, Umeå, and Stockholm. Apart from three 90 min lectures each day, we had either additional student seminars or group work where a smaller number of students had the opportunity to quiz the teacher on any points that remained unclear during the lectures. The plan is to have similar events at AlbaNova in coming years during January when the Nordita apartments are not being used for Nordita scientific programs.
The next meeting of the Nordita Board will be in Stockholm on June 4, 2010.
