GET SWAMID ASSURANCE LEVEL

nordita.org/assurancelevel

Stockholm University is a member of SWAMID, the Swedish Academic Identity Federation, and therefore needs to follow their rules for the secure handling of computing accounts. One mechanism is assigning assurance levels (AL) to computing accounts. This is basically an indication of how certain the account issuer (Stockholm University) is who the account actually belongs to.

Starting 25 May 2020, Stockholm University provides two SWAMID Assurance Levels, AL1 (which is based on information provided by the account user themselves) and AL2 (where at some point an identity check has been made).

There are only a few computing services at Stockholm University where your account's assurance level makes a difference. One is when you need to activate eduroam for your account, or change your eduroam password.

You should first check if your SU account has an assurance level.

If you need to obtain an assurance level AL1 for your account, just follow the instructions below.

Note that during the procedure to assign an assurance level to your account you need to reset your password!

If you think you need an assurance level AL2 you first have to create an eduID account. Follow these instructions on how to create an eduID account on the SU site.

Read more about how to get an assurance level for your SU account.

1. Check if your SU Computing Account has an Assurance Level Assigned

  • Go to kontohantering.su.se. Log in using your usual SU username and password.
  • The language settings can be changed in the upper right corner of the page.
  • In the main menu choice "Universitetskonto" (or "University Account") you should see a lot of information about yourself and your SU computing account. In the section "Organisationstillhörighet" (or "Organizational Affiliation") there should be a line "Tillitsnivå" (or "Assurance"). If that line is empty you need to reactivate your account to get an assurance level. If your account does have an assurance level the line should read "SWAMID AL1" or "SWAMID AL2".

2. Obtain a One-Time Code from Hans

What you need to do is to activate your SU computing account. As a newcomer to Nordita and SU you need to do this anyway, to activate your e-mail. If you activated your account before the 25 May 2020 you need to do this once again if you want to get an assurance level assigned to your account.

Account (re)activation requires a one-time code for authentication. This consists of an identity (like a username) and a secret (like a password) that you need to enter to start the process. It is really only valid once, and you can forget about it once you have completed the procedure.

Write a mail to info@nordita.org and ask for a one-time code.

3. (Re)Activate your Account

The next step is to re-activate your account. As part of this process you need to change your account password.

  • First go to kontohantering.su.se and make sure that you have logged in once to using your usual SU username and password. If you see the page immediately, then you are logged in.
  • Then go to aktivera.su.se.
  • Click on the middle button "One-time code".

  • Enter the one-time identity and the one-time secret in the form and press [Login] to continue.
  • If you get an error message complaining about "pre-authentication" you forgot to log in properly to kontohantering.su.se.

  • Follow the instructions about confirming your identity and proving you are not a robot.
  • You should now see a confirmation that your user account has been identified. Press [Reset password] to continue.

  • You should now see a confirmation that your password was reset. As you see the new password was selected by the system. If you want choose your password yourself, see how you can change your password below.

4. Check if your Account now has an Assurance Level

It is now time to see if your account has been assigned an assurance level:

  • Go back to kontohantering.su.se.
  • Check if it says "SWAMID Al1" on the line "Tillitsnivå" (or "Assurance").
NOTE. It may be that you need to reload the page, or close and reopen your browser window, or log out and in again until the assurance level shows up.

Appendix. How to Change Your Password

If anytime you want to change your SU account password, proceed as follows. (This has nothing to do with setting the assurance level of your account.)

At Stockholm University a new password must be at least 10 characters long, the same character may occur no more than 3 times, and must contain both upper and lower case letters and numbers. The password must not be a name, place name, course name, telephone number, as word that can be found in a dictionary, be a password that you have already used befor or contain the Swedish letters å, ä, ö.

  • Go to su.se/changepassword. If prompted, log in using your SU username and current password.
  • In the form, fill in your username and current password, then twice the new password. Confirm with [Change password].
